Japanese Technology Giant Sony Partners with Social Media Platform to Bring Web3 Games onto Its Network! Here are the Details
Japanese technology giants Sony and LINE have announced a strategic blockchain partnership to bring four gaming applications on LINE's platform to Sony's blockchain network Soneium.
Sony and LINE Partner to Bring Web3 Games to Soneium Blockchain
Sony's blockchain division is integrating with Soneium, a blockchain network designed to onboard LINE's gaming ecosystem from Web2 users to Web3.
LINE, Japan's largest social media platform, has 200 million active users, and this partnership is a significant step towards the mainstream adoption of Web3.
As part of the agreement, four LINE-based games Sleepagotchi, Farm Frens, Puffy Match, and Pocket Mob Soneium will be adapted and will allow in-game rewards and purchases supported by blockchain technology.
Soneium's Web3 Vision
Soneium, launched in January 2025, is a layer-2 blockchain built on Ethereum using Optimism's OP Stack. According to L2 Beat, it is currently the 15th largest layer-2 network by locked total value (TVL).
The project is managed by Sony Block Solutions Labs (SBSL), a joint venture between Sony and Singapore-based Startale Labs. The goal is to seamlessly integrate Web3 experiences into daily applications.
Jun Watanabe, President of Sony Block Solutions Labs, said, “LINE has created a strong asset and integrating successful mini-applications into the Soneium ecosystem is the next step towards making Web3 more accessible. We believe that this collaboration will increase participation and adoption in ways that were previously difficult to achieve.”
With the combination of Sony and LINE's forces, this move indicates that blockchain technology will be further embraced in Japan's technology and gaming industry, bridging the gap between traditional digital platforms and Web3 innovations.
