Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren has requested the U.S. Department of Commerce provide records related to Bitmain Technologies, the Chinese company dominating the bitcoin mining equipment market. In a letter to Secretary Howard Lutnick, she has asked for documentation and discussions related to potential national security risks as well as measures that have been taken.

This request comes amid the ongoing federal investigation “Operation Red Sunset,” led by the Department of Homeland Security, which has yet to conclude whether Bitmain’s ASIC machines could be exploited for espionage or disrupt the U.S. power grid. Previous reports have highlighted concerning vulnerabilities. Bitmain denies the allegations. Warren is also concerned about the business ties between the Trump family and Bitmain, questioning the political influence on security decisions.
