Nasdaq's NCT Moves into Web3: Acquires Starks Network to Transform the Shipping Industry with Blockchain

[BlockBeats] News came on December 8 that Nasdaq-listed company Intercont (Cayman) Limited (ticker: NCT) is preparing to enter the Web3 space. The company just announced plans to acquire a minority stake (less than 50%) in Singapore-based tech firm Starks Network Ltd, marking a strategic investment to test the waters.

Both companies have set their sights on the zCloak Network project. zCloak is fairly well-known in the industry—focusing on AI digital identity verification, enterprise self-custody wallet solutions, stablecoin payment channels, and AI-driven crypto payment technologies. Its roster of backers is impressive, with top-tier institutions like Coinbase Ventures involved.

What’s interesting is the direction of the collaboration: NCT plans to bring this Web3 technology to the shipping and trade sector. It makes sense—traditional shipping involves cumbersome cross-border payments and document flows. If blockchain payments and digital processes can be implemented, there’s significant potential for efficiency gains.

Both NCT and Starks have stated that this acquisition is part of the group’s long-term strategy to explore cross-industry integration. It looks like they’re preparing to introduce enterprise-level Web3 solutions to the global shipping industry, kicking off a combination of traditional industries and blockchain technology.

Traditional giants from Nasdaq are also starting to get into Web3. This time, they're testing the waters in shipping, which feels a bit fresh. But with NCT holding less than a 50% stake... do they really want to get involved, or are they just afraid of things going wrong?

The shipping industry is getting on-chain too. Nowadays, if you don’t have Web3, you can hardly call yourself a future-focused industry.

Is the shipping industry really embracing Web3? That depends on whether NCT truly wants reform or is just hyping a concept. zCloak's tech stack is indeed impressive, but it's hard to say how long it can actually last in real-world trade scenarios. With Coinbase's endorsement, at least the direction doesn't seem too far off. Experimental investments are just about testing the waters—a smart move. But the question is, does such a traditional industry like shipping really need blockchain? Or is it just trying to ride the wave?

shipping logistics on-chain... now that's a battle-tested use case if i've seen one. consensus finality matters when you're moving millions in cargo. curious how they'll handle the slashing risk tho, ngl

Is the shipping industry about to be transformed by Web3? Can this approach really be implemented, or is it just another hype-driven concept...
