➢ A Yomiuri poll showed 67% against it, while an ANN poll showed 52%. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's approval ratings remain high (71% and 65.2%), despite US pressure to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
Japan is prepared to contribute, but with restrictions imposed by its pacifism law; the possible deployment of minesweepers after the ceasefire is discussed. Japan has no concrete plans, but will monitor the situation and take action if necessary.
Japan previously sent minesweepers to the Persian Gulf in 1991, and currently about 45 of its vessels remain in the strait. Unilateral negotiations with Iran are not currently under consideration, although Tehran has stated its readiness to allow passage for Japanese ships.
