I just remembered an interesting fact about Pepe the Frog — this meme actually has a much deeper history than most people realize.

It all started in 2005 when artist Matt Furie introduced Pepe into his comic Boy's Club. Initially, it was just a regular character, but then there was a scene where Pepe says "Feels good, man" — and from that moment, this Pepe image began to spread everywhere. By 2008, it appeared on 4chan, where the internet community started creating a variety of variations: Sad Pepe, Smug Pepe, Feels Bad Man — each version expressing a different emotion.

But the interesting part is that Pepe became a true cultural icon. It’s not just used to express sadness or loneliness, but also in many other contexts. During 2015-2016, it was even adopted by some political groups, which sparked significant controversy — even the Anti-Defamation League added some versions to their hate symbol list. However, Matt Furie, the original creator, strongly opposed this kind of usage.

The most fascinating part is the "Rare Pepe" phenomenon — on 4chan, unique versions of Pepe images became collectible items traded as rare collectibles. And as cryptocurrency and NFTs started to grow, Pepe made its way into that space too. It became an inspiration for token projects and blockchain-based NFT collections — some tokens are based on the Counterparty protocol, and there are unique NFT collections.

I'm curious whether we can create a special Pepe version for the crypto community. Maybe a "Pepe Blockchain" with a philosophical take on technology, or some truly unique rare meme. The community is always looking for new symbols, and Pepe has proven it has long-term staying power. Anything built on a cultural foundation truly has a chance to succeed.
