Got frustrated when my number kept showing as private on every call I made. People weren't picking up, and I had no idea why. Turned out there are actually several reasons why your number coming up private happens, and most of them are fixable.

First thing I checked was whether caller ID was actually enabled on my phone. On Android, this usually lives in your Phone app settings under Caller ID or Supplementary services, though it varies by manufacturer like Samsung or Google Pixel. You're basically telling your carrier network to display your number instead of blocking it. For iPhone users, iOS 26 moved this to Settings > Apps > Phone > Show My Caller ID. Just toggle that switch on and you're usually good.

If that didn't work for me, I'd try the USSD codes that talk directly to your carrier. Dialing *31# makes your number visible for all outgoing calls. Some networks use #31# instead, so worth trying both. There's also *#31# to check your current caller ID status. These codes bypass your phone settings and go straight to the network level.

When nothing worked, I reset my network settings completely. Android users go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings. iPhone is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset Network Settings. Your phone will restart and reconnect to the carrier, which often fixes sync issues between your device and the network.

Other culprits I discovered: privacy apps like Truecaller or RoboKiller can block your caller ID if they have deep permissions. Also, older SIM cards sometimes struggle with newer networks, so replacing yours might help. And if you're roaming internationally, the caller ID signal can get lost passing through different networks.

The annoying part is sometimes your carrier controls this at the account level, so even if your phone says caller ID is on, they might be blocking it from their end. In that case you'd need to contact them directly. But most of the time, checking those phone settings and running through the USSD codes fixes why your number coming up private.
