I've noticed that many newcomers to crypto still don't understand what testnets are and why they are needed. Yet, they are one of the most interesting ways to participate in project development and even earn rewards.
Almost every serious project uses a test network before launching on the mainnet. Bitcoin, Aptos, Sui, Arbitrum — all of them started here. The idea is simple: developers need a platform where they can test everything without risking breaking the real network. Tokens on the testnet are just virtual copies and have no real value.
What are testnets from a technical perspective? Essentially, they are copies of the main blockchain where code is tested, functions are verified, and all bugs are identified before anything goes live. An interesting point: mining difficulty is artificially limited, so anyone can participate without requiring serious computing power. This allows development teams to safely conduct analysis and updates.
Now for the most exciting part — how to make money from this. Projects often launch Airdrop programs specifically for testers. The logic is clear: you help find bugs, verify functions, perform transactions, and as a thank you, receive tokens. Not all projects do this, but most major ones distribute rewards to active testers before their official release.
Tip: if you see an announcement about a testnet for an interesting project, don’t hesitate to join. At worst, you gain experience; at best, you catch a good airdrop. The key is to be active and interact regularly with the network. On Gate, you can track projects preparing for launch and learn about their testing phases in advance.
