I just realized there's something we need to talk about—what does "rug pull" actually mean? Many people are still confused but keep getting caught. So, in short, a rug pull is a scam where the developer suddenly pulls out all investor funds and disappears. The result? Investors are left with tokens that have no value or liquidity that has dried up.
The mechanism is pretty simple but effective. First, they launch a project—could be a token, NFT, or DeFi protocol. Then they create huge hype through social media, influencers, or bombastic promises of high returns and upcoming partnerships. Investors start buying and providing liquidity, but suddenly—boom—the team vanishes with all the money. This is what’s called a rug pull, meaning a structured theft in the crypto project space.
There are several variants to watch out for. Some immediately withdraw liquidity, some dump all their tokens, and others just abandon the project but still take the money. The most famous example is the Squid Game Token—its price skyrocketed, then the developer did a rug pull and stole millions. Many NFT projects also have their teams disappear after the mint sells out, then delete their websites and social media.
To avoid falling into these traps, I recommend a few things. First, use established and trusted DEXs and NFT platforms. Second, research their team, roadmap, and look for audits from credible security firms. Third, make sure their liquidity is locked and the smart contract is verified. Most importantly—don’t FOMO into hype-driven tokens or projects with anonymous teams. Understanding what a rug pull is helps you protect yourself in this market.
