On the way from Luxor to Aswan, I unexpectedly came across the Esna Temple! Other temples are all open-air, but this one is tucked 9 meters underground in the city, surrounded by a vegetable market😂 For two thousand years, dust had covered it so thoroughly that even its mother wouldn't recognize it until a German archaeological team arrived with equipment to perform a deep cleaning. Once the dust was removed, everyone was stunned. The ceiling was outrageously brightly colored! Constellation patterns, unfamiliar divine beasts, Roman emperors cosplaying as Egyptian priests... everything was revealed. Currently, most visitors are casual tourists, but I see they’re working on the visitor center, and the elevator has been installed. Those who want to visit should come early.
