NVDA|NVIDIA partners with OpenAI competitors, providing 1 gigawatt Vera Rubin chips to Thinking Machines
Nvidia (US: NVDA) announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Thinking Machines Lab, an AI company competing with OpenAI. Nvidia will supply over 1 gigawatt (GW) of next-generation Vera Rubin chips to them.
In a joint statement, Nvidia and Thinking Machines said these processors will be delivered early next year, and both parties will “design training and service systems for Nvidia architectures, and provide cutting-edge AI and open models more broadly to enterprises, research institutions, and the scientific community.”
Nvidia will make significant investments in Thinking Machines
Thinking Machines CEO Mira Murati stated that Nvidia’s technology is the foundation of the entire AI field. This collaboration will accelerate both companies’ ability to build AI, enabling people to shape and utilize AI, thereby unlocking human potential.
According to the agreement, Nvidia will also make substantial investments in Thinking Machines to support the company’s long-term development, though the investment amount has not been disclosed.
Mira Murati founded Thinking Machines in 2025 after stepping down as OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer in 2024. She briefly served as CEO of OpenAI, but the OpenAI board dismissed Sam Altman in 2023. Altman was later reinstated, though the OpenAI board underwent significant restructuring.
