The United States and Israel suddenly strike.

According to CCTV News, on March 10 local time, the U.S. and Israel launched a fierce attack on Iran. The U.S. Department of Defense and local Iranian sources described it as the most intense airstrike in this conflict so far.

Due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, global energy markets are volatile, and international oil prices are experiencing some of the most dramatic fluctuations in recorded history. On March 10, local time, President Trump announced plans to build a new oil refinery in Brownsville, Texas. The project involves an investment of about $300 billion, making it one of the largest investment projects in U.S. history.

U.S. and Israel Launch Heavy Airstrikes

On March 11, CCTV News reported that on March 10, local time, the U.S. and Israel carried out a fierce attack on Iran.

It is reported that the White House reiterated President Trump’s previous warning: if Iran attempts to block energy transportation through the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. will impose strong measures against Iran. The White House also stated that Trump has proposed a plan for U.S. Navy escort to ensure the safe passage of oil tankers.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said on the 10th that the U.S. military would launch the “highest intensity” strike against Iran during this military operation. At a press conference, Austin said, “Today will again be the day with the highest strike intensity inside Iran,” and the U.S. military will deploy the largest number of fighter jets and bombers in this operation, using intelligence that is “more precise and higher quality than ever before” to target Iranian sites.

According to CCTV International, after several South Korean media reports the previous day that some of the U.S. THAAD missile defense systems stationed in South Korea had recently been moved to the Middle East, multiple South Korean media outlets today (March 11) continued to report that evidence shows all six THAAD launchers have been removed from the deployment base in Seongju County, North Gyeongsang Province. It is unclear whether all six launchers have been fully transferred to the Middle East.

As of now, South Korean officials and the U.S. military in South Korea have not confirmed these disclosures.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the Iranian military issued a statement on the 10th saying that they used suicide drones to attack a weapons manufacturing facility and a satellite intelligence data reception center located in Haifa, Israel.

The statement said the targeted military facilities play a key role in weapons production and are of strategic importance to Israel’s combat capabilities. The attacked satellite data center is crucial for collecting military and intelligence data and coordinating the operation of Israeli reconnaissance satellites.

On March 10, local time, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that over the past week, they had attacked security targets across Iran, with the most severe damage in Iran’s Ilam Province in the west. The IDF claimed that their actions destroyed most of the core facilities of Iran’s security forces and local militia groups.

The IDF stated that the targets destroyed included the headquarters of Iran’s security forces, intelligence agencies, facilities related to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the headquarters of special forces of the internal security forces, and multiple militia organization facilities.

Major Announcement by Trump

On March 10, local time, U.S. President Trump announced plans to build a new oil refinery in Brownsville, Texas. This is reportedly the first new refinery built in the U.S. in 50 years.

Trump said the new refinery would be built at the Port of Brownsville, with a total investment of about $300 billion, making it one of the largest investment projects in U.S. history.

According to informed officials speaking to the media, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has proposed releasing the largest-ever stockpile of oil to stabilize the sharp rise in crude prices during the U.S.-Iran conflict.

Officials said this release would exceed the combined 182 million barrels of oil released in two phases by IEA member countries after the Russia-Ukraine conflict erupted in 2022. The proposal was circulated at an emergency meeting of energy officials from 32 IEA member countries on Tuesday.

Countries are expected to decide on the proposal by Wednesday. If there are no objections, it will be approved; but if even one country objects, the plan could be delayed.

However, Morgan Stanley’s head of commodities research, Natasha Kaneva, stated in a recent report that unless the security of the Strait of Hormuz is guaranteed, all policy tools will have limited impact on oil prices, as potential supply losses could reach up to 12 million barrels per day (12 mbd) in the next two weeks.

Morgan Stanley said that Trump is reviewing several measures to suppress oil prices, including restricting U.S. exports, intervening in oil futures markets, waiving certain federal taxes, and suspending the Jones Act requirements.

The current U.S. strategic focus is on weakening Iran’s asymmetric warfare capabilities that threaten commercial shipping. Once these disruptions are sufficiently suppressed, U.S. Navy escort and government-backed insurance can restore confidence for commercial oil tankers crossing the Strait of Hormuz. An official statement from the U.S. Navy or CENTCOM regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz and the initiation of escort operations would be the real trigger for a turning point in oil prices.
