ClawdBot Rebrand Sparks Crypto Scam Confusion

CryptoFrontNews
  • Peter Steinberger confirms he will never launch a coin; any token linked to him is a scam.

  • Moltbot lets users run AI locally and connect to WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and Discord.

  • Scammers exploited the rebrand; only @moltbot on X and official GitHub are legitimate.

A major warning has emerged in the crypto and AI community as ClawdBot’s founder, Peter Steinberger, clarified he is not involved in any cryptocurrency projects. Steinberger stated on X, formerly Twitter, “To all crypto folks: Please stop pinging me, stop harassing me. I will never do a coin. Any project that lists me as coin owner is a SCAM.”

ClawdBot, a popular open-source AI assistant, had to change its name to Moltbot because of trademark issues. Scammers quickly took advantage of the switch, falsely linking Steinberger to fake crypto tokens and confusing users.

ClawdBot allows users to run an AI agent locally with full system access. The tool integrates with messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and Discord, which fueled its viral growth. Within 24 hours of launch, the project earned 9,000 GitHub stars and surpassed 60,000 by day three. However, the renaming caused operational mishaps.

Steinberger explained, “Had to rename our accounts for trademark stuff and messed up the GitHub rename, and the X rename got snatched by crypto shills.” Additionally, he clarified that the name change was not voluntary. “Crypto folks: I was forced to rename the account by Anthropic. Wasn’t my decision,” he added.

Crypto Scammers Exploit Popular AI Tools

The incident highlights a broader risk for tech founders as viral projects attract scammers. The original X handle clawdbot no longer exists, and Steinberger noted the only legitimate X account is moltbot.

He confirmed GitHub’s resolution: “GitHub’s resolved. This only affected my personal account, not the org (messed up the rename).” He also warned, “You are actively damaging the project,” urging users not to pay any fees or engage with fraudulent token claims.
