The U.S. Department of Defense is considering deploying 10,000 ground troops to the Middle East.

Gate News reports that on March 27, a U.S. Defense Department official revealed that the Pentagon is considering deploying up to 10,000 ground troops to the Middle East to provide President Trump with more military options as he weighs negotiations with Iran. The force, which may include infantry and armored vehicles, will join approximately 5,000 Marines and thousands of 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers already deployed in the region. It is not yet clear where exactly these troops will be stationed in the Middle East, but they are likely to be positioned within range to strike Iran and its Hark Island. Trump has repeatedly stated that he will open the Strait of Hormuz regardless of whether U.S. allies assist. White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said that all announcements regarding troop deployments will be made by the Department of Defense, and that President Trump retains control over all military options. The spokesperson for U.S. Central Command, responsible for U.S. military forces in the Middle East, declined to comment.
